About
Hello! I’m Charlie or Charlotte (I answer to both) and I am the hand, body and creative mind behind By Charlie’s Hand!
I’m 34 and I live in the South Wales valleys with my boyfriend affectionately referred to on social media as ‘The Trucker’ even though he’s not an actual truck driver it’s just a silly inside joke between us.
I studied Fine Art at the University of Wales, Newport and after graduating in 2010 I began papercutting as I was an unemployed art bum and couldn’t paint anymore as I no longer had access to a lovely studio after moving back home with my parents. I’ve been a long time fan of a Rob Ryan and my parents had a scalpel stashed away in a kitchen drawer and I thought I’d give cutting some holes in paper a go! Working on my parents kitchen table my first attempts were terrible, I’ve seen 50p coins look more circular, but I was addicted.
By Charlie’s Hand started as a Facebook page in early 2011 to spare my friends having to see my papercutting attempts on my personal profile but then it started to grow! Random strangers started to like what I was doing, my skills improved and in late 2011, after a terrible year losing both my grandmothers, took the decision to quit my part time job and take the plunge into self employment as a full time artist!
Since then By Charlie’s Hand has grown into a range of products from calendars to notebooks, I’ve exhibited across the UK and sent work around the globe.
I’m fueled by tea, a love of colour and making a little bit of joy each day in my tiny home studio, which is not normally this tidy.
